Hiring the Right Staff
Whatever kind of organisation you run, a broadcaster, a government, a pizza shop, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is your choice of staff.
But how do you find good ones?
First and foremost, take chance out of it. Don’t simply post a job ad, or ask a friend for a recommendation and hope it works out.
Most organisations’ entire recruitment strategy is one of these.
And maybe a mission statement you haven’t checked since the organisation was first set up.
Unfortunately, that’s not enough!
To attract the right staff, you need to create a productive and healthy work culture so that good people want to be there.
Secondly, use a psychological or behavioural profiling tool to make sure you’re hiring the right person for a given role. There are many to choose from, but one of the most effective and popular is DISC.
The DISC system identifies four main behavioural types. You might have noticed these qualities in your friends and family, and it’s interesting to work out which one you are too.
Dominance focused employees are driven by achievement and like the big picture and a no-nonsense approach.
Influence focused employees like to persuade others and enjoy collaboration.
Steadiness focused employees like dependability and don’t like to be rushed.
Conscientiousness focused employees value accuracy and enjoy working independently.
There’s much more to each of these types, but a DISC profile can help you understand your prospective employee and ensure they are a fit for the role. They can also help you tailor the role and your management of the employee to match what will work best with them.
You’ll learn what motivates them, what their needs are, how they can work better in a team and how they can be developed.
For instance, some employees need a lot of hands-on direction, others prefer to work independently. Some need a job with meaning and purpose in it, others need one that has clear, measurable targets. You have to truly understand your employees so you can fit them into the right role and have them thrive at work.
To gain the insights of DISC, your prospective employee just needs to complete a questionnaire. An expert in the tool can then help guide you through the results.
